Pollokshields Church Of Scotland

All of the churches in Pollokshields (of which there once were 10) were built at corner sites.
2 (Trinity: Architect W.G.Rowan and Pollokshields U.P. : Architect W.F.McGibbon) were destroyed by fire, 2 (St Gilbert's : Architects Stewart & Paterson and Titwood: Architect H.E.Clifford) were dismantled and rebuilt elsewhere and 1 (Pollokshields Free Church: Architect W.G.Rowan) has been adapted for use as a nursing home. St Ninian's was the first Episcopal church to be built on the south side of the city. Designed by David Thomson, it was begun in 1872 and is early French Gothic in style, with an impressive Victorian interior. St Albert's R.C. Church was designed as Stockwell Free Church in a free Italian Renaissance style by J.B.Wilson and dates from 1886/7. Pollokshields Church of Scotland opened in 1878, and was designed by Robert Baldie in Mixed Gothic style, is lavishly furnished and famed for its stained glass windows. The Congregational Church dates from 1903. Designed by Steele & Balfour in Gothic mid-pointed style, built in red sandstone and without a tower. Sherbrooke - the original Sherbrooke Church was commissioned by the Bellahouston Free Church Trustees and the first service was conducted in the hall in 1894. The church was designed by the architect W.F. McGibbon in 13th century continental Gothic style. The congregation of St Gilbert's Church, formerly sited in Sherbrooke Avenue, amalgamated with Sherbrooke Church in 1942 when St Gilbert's"Church was dismantled - and reincarnated as Burnside Church! Sherbrooke was destroyed by fire on 28 July 1994 but restored and refurbished by 1998 by James Cuthbertson Architects. Of the original interior only the the brass eagle lectern and brass font plate survived. And entirely new stained glass windows were commissioned from the Stained Glass Design Partnership of Kilmaurs.

A synagogue for the Orthodox Hebrew Congregation of Pollokshields was established at 1612 Nithsdale Road in 1929. It closed in 1984 when the villa reverted to residential use. The Glasgow New Synagogue, a reform synagogue, opened in 1951 at 306 Albert Drive. In 1968 it moved to new premises in Newton Mearns.

A Sikh Temple was opened at 32 St Andrew's Drive for the Bhatra Singh section of the Sikh community in 1966. The Sikh Sabha Association opened at 163 Nithsdale Road in 1966. A traditional Mosque dates from 1979 in Forth Street.
