The Tramway

Currently undergoing some £2.3 million renovation works as the first phase of major upgrading, this historic building is entering a new episode of adventure! Originally built in 1894 as the Coplawhill Tramway Works and Tram Depot, by W. Clark of the Tramways Department, it housed stables on the first floor, for the horses that pulled the first tramcars. Electric trams were built there from 1896 to 1954. From 1964 it was the location of the Transport Museum until 1989 when it moved to its current location in the Kelvinhall. Since 1989 'Tramway' has been the venue for some"outstanding and internationally acclaimed theatre productions, including the Mahabarata and Border Warfare and in recent years, at the forefront of the visual arts.
